Food and Wine Announces Best New Chefs 2014
On Tuesday, the influential food magazine named Qui one of the country’s top 12 new chefs. Qui is joined by Matthew Accarrino of SPQR in San Francisco, CA; Dave Beran of Next in Chicago, IL; Greg Denton & Gabrielle Quiñónez Denton of Ox in Portland, OR; Eli Kulp of Fork in Philadelphia, PA; Matt McCallister of FT33 in Dallas, TX; Joe Ogrodnek & Walker Stern of Dover in Brooklyn, NY; Cara Stadler of Tao Yuan in Brunswick, ME; Ari Taymor of Alma in Los Angeles, CA; and Justin Yu of Oxheart in Houston, TX.
The chefs responded to the news with a range of emotions ranging from excited to, well, very excited. Justin Yu, of Oxheart, said that because the reveal was on April 1, he actually thought he was getting pranked as part of an April Fool’s Day joke when he heard the news. “I was like, someone’s got to be joking,” Yu told Food & Wine. “It’s something I had been dreaming about for a very long time. I felt a mixture of impending doom and elation.”
Meanwhile, Matt McCallister of FT33 joked that he responded by saying “a four-letter word followed by another four-letter word.” Paul Qui, a self-described “pretty quiet dude,” said that he sat in his office to take in the good news, then went back to work.
“Food & Wine Best New Chefs set the trends for restaurants across the country,” says Food & Wine‘s Editor in Chief Dana Cowin, who helped announce this year’s top new chefs by taking Instagram selfies with the chosen few.
The new class of best new chefs will be featured in the July issue of Food & Wine as well as showcased at the 32nd annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen.
